Short Essay, Unit 2

DUE: Oct 23rd, in class or by email before class starts

Reminder: If you choose to do an extra credit paper for Unit 2, it is due at the same time as the Short Essay.

What You Should Turn In

  • 1 (one) 650-1300 word essay either
    • Summarizing Regan's position on animal rights and his justification and applying it to the topic of abortion OR
    • Summarizing Warren's position on abortion and her justification and applying it to the topic of animal liberation
  • Both topics should include citations of page or section # in text, as well as quotations when necessary.

Purpose

  • Summarize another person's argument
  • Analyze the argument to pull out key features
  • Apply key features to a different topic

Assignment

Choose either Tom Regan's Case for Animal Rights or Mary Anne Warren's "On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion."

For the topic you chose,

  • Summarize in one to two paragraphs (250 - 500 words) the standard of personhood the author uses to argue their position.  Be complete and to the point.
  • Apply this standard to the topic of the other author's work (for Regan, apply it to abortion; for Warren, apply it to animal liberation) and explain in one to two paragraphs (250 - 500 words) what conclusion your chosen author would come to on that topic (i.e. "On Abortion, Regan would likely say . . ." or "On the topic of Animal Rights, Warren would probably say . . . .")
  • In the last paragraph (150 - 300 words), explain whether you think the other author choice would agree or disagree with the conclusions you drew.  So if you chose Regan, do you think Warren would agree with the conclusions you drew?  And if you chose Warren, do you think Regan would agree with the conclusions you drew?
